Litany of the saints

Peace Prayer

Lord, make me an instrumentThe  of Thy peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is error, the truth;
Where there is doubt, the faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek
To be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life~~~~~~~~~~St.Francis of Assisi

In the Catholic tradition and calendar, November 1st is a day of celebration in honor of all Christian saints…..to me,I like it to be a day of remembrance/dedication  of saints of all religious beliefs and traditions……….Buddhist,Hindu,Muslim,Jewish…etc,etc……

Growing up in a Catholic family…….I went to Mass/church on this day as it was a day of obligation, a day where according to catholic tradition if one(baptised Catholic)didn’t attend this celebratory Mass,it would be considered a sin.So I went to church on this day dedicatedly as a young child and adult.I went to Mass on this day not because I was told to believe or that I would commit a sin for not going……….the truth I went was because I believed if I went to celebrate this auspicious day with all these saints,that they will help me grow in spirit and help me be like them……..I have often pondered on their lives and how they had chosen to walk in this world yet to choose an ascetic life where the world would not distract their attraction for a higher Divine purpose.

From a very young age,I was very much attracted to sublime beings,saints,’holy’people and people who had a call to a transformative spiritual and religious live……….I loved reading books especially the colored pictures/cartoon type/animated comic books on Catholic saints………I would find myself in imagination and contemplation of their lives…how they could do what they did.I could read their stories over and over without ever getting tired of it……and I love watching movies on the lives of saints over again as well…..till today,I will never tire of anything to do with people who have dedicated their lives to opening their hearts to love without getting daunted by the truth of suffering…………

Who were these saints?

They were people like us all….human,sentient beings with feelings, needs and flaws.They were not born attained with title of saints…they had to go through life accordingly like us all………they had to go thru sufferings,challenges,difficulties,trials,weaknesses,tests of temptations and of course  moments of delights and pleasures.Some of them were young children/teens,some were householders,married with children,some were rich from politically powerful families,some were extravagant and promiscuous,some were skeptics and persecutors of religious faiths and some were beggars and thieves and murderers and some came from extreme poverty stricken families and there were those who were abandoned by their families…………….

And who did they become?

Some became hermits/monks/nuns,there are those who are spiritual teachers…spreading peace and love and the end of suffering,some became healers,healing body/mind/soul,others dedicated their lives to caring for the poor,sick and homeless,some are writers …sharing experiences and the spiritual journey….,some become therapists/yoga teachers and there are the some who lead an ordinary life sharing goodness to others…………………..

What were they like?

These beings all had one thing in common………the focus of a Higher Divine Consciousness/purpose,and the opening of the human Heart to the truth of Love/compassion and the acceptance of suffering not as an end in itself but for the sake of teaching that suffering is inevitable and that suffering is needed and can be overcomed ……..to have courage to face suffering and transcend it.They are not a ‘special’class of people….each one was extraordinary….they undertook the extra effort and courage to utilise their total energy in the pursuit of purification of self(death of the ego)),the finding of peace and forgiveness….and the living of their lives in Truth(non-duality).They speak of peace and joy!

Two of my favourite Christian saints……Saint Bernadette Soubirous of Lourdes,France….for her purity and innocence of heart,her devotion to prayer and her endurance of suffering right thru her death at a young age.

Saint Francis of Assisi……..for his total spiritual transformation……for giving up his extravagant/promiscouous and rich lifestyle…..for his embrace of simplicity and poverty and a Heart rich with the truth of Love,peace and joy and forgiveness……….as his words above says it allimages…………where there is injury….pardon! Where there is hatred…love!

There is a saying….”underneath every saint was a sinner”……………..so can we all be that one saint………..we are all the same……we are not who we think we are………within us all….there we are ‘all saints’!…………when we take courage to look Within….we will change and become saints!

Hindu, Muslim,Christian, Buddhist….we are all One….Human being!And the teaching is One and the same………LOVE!
